How to Develop your Leadership Skills

How to Develop your Leadership Skills

At the end of the day, a leader is just somebody that makes those around them better. Whether it’s your friends, your family, your kids, your neighbors or your coworkers, it’s about making those people better. So that being said, we’re all leaders. So how do we become better leaders? Let’s talk about seven tips on how to do that.

Mental Toughness

As a leader, you have to have mental toughness. Nothing easy is worth being proud of and no job is easy. No task is easy at the end of the day so you have to be mentally tough. You are going to hit road blocks and you are going to have to be able to overcome those. So remain positive minded, have a positive mental mindset, and be mentally tough, and you are going to be a better leader.

Competitiveness

By competitiveness I mean the will to win, the will to succeed, the will to not give up, and the will to overcome failures. The number one person you need to compete with is yourself. How do you beat the version of yourself from yesterday, or a month ago, or a year ago? Constant growth, constant improvement, and being competitive is key to success.

Humility

Always be humble, always give others credit and if there is feedback to give others, encourage them ten times before you have any kind of constructive feedback to give to them. Just remain humble. Once you brag, you catch a snag, so don’t do that.

Execution Excellence

That’s about saying what you do and doing what you say. Standing behind your word and going the extra mile to ensure that you are doing everything you can to be better and to make those around you better. Doesn’t mean you don’t make mistakes, but a mistake made twice is a decision. Don’t do that. Execution excellence is about learning from our mistakes, not making them again, and always growing as a person.

Loyalty

Always stand behind your teammates, your family, your friends, your customers and always do what’s right even if it hurts or even if it’s the harder path. Do what’s right and be loyal to your team.

Have High Passion and Positive Attitude

Passion is key – your followers are going to be a reflection of you because they mirror you. So the more passionate you are, the more positive you are, the more passionate and positive they are going to be. Nobody wants to follow a leader that’s not passionate about what they are doing. So always step up your passion level month over month.

Take Accountability for Everything

Take accountability when it’s your fault and take accountability when it’s somebody else’s fault. A true leader always takes accountability of every result that there is. That will earn you respect and loyalty from your team. Never make an excuse, always work to get better, and take accountability of everything that occurs within your team, your family, and your friend network. Take that accountability and take it as a goal of how you can learn from it and get better in the future.

Hopefully, these seven tips help you develop your leadership skills.

5 Ways Bad Leadership Can Destroy Your Business

5 Ways Bad Leadership Can Destroy Your Business

A business success depends on some components, and the most important of these components is good business leadership. Without the right leadership, a business will not succeed. Just look at some of the most successful companies in the world and then take a look at their leaders, such as Microsoft and Bill Gates. However, not all those in a position of power have adequate leadership skills, and the result is usually a company that fails, one of the biggest business failures of all time; Kenneth Lay and Enron.

If you are in a position of power lead your company to success by avoiding bad leadership skills. Below are some examples of the most common types of poor leadership and how you can avoid them.

  1. Poor Communication Skills

Communication is essential for success in any business. The inability to communicate goals and expectations will lead to confusion, poor performance as well as bad results. Work on your communication skills to make sure everybody understands the objectives and the expectations. Use various forms of communication to convey the message effectively, such as hold meetings, send newsletters and emails.

  1. Non-Flexible

Leaders who cannot change their approach and who are not willing to make changes are almost guaranteed not to succeed. In today’s world, that kind of “It’s my way or no way” attitude does not fly. Colleagues and staff need to be heard and want to know that their opinion is significant. If a leader’s current tactics are not working, these tactics must be modified.

  1. Being Too Friendly

Of course, being friendly is a good thing, and it definitely helps maintain the morale of your staff. However, being too kind can be harmful. There will be times when you should make vital decisions related to your staff, and if you are too friendly with your peers and staff, you may not be willing to accept such decisions. Some may also try to take advantage of their relationship with you to get ahead. You can be friendly to avoid this problem, but set limits and ensure your staff understands that you are the boss.

  1. Being Biased

Let’s be honest; it is human nature to choose sides. We all support a specific character in a movie or in a book. But the workplace is not a movie or a book; it is reality and your business, and if you want to execute the fairest shipment possible, you will have to remain unbiased. You cannot choose sides when there is a confrontation, or provide a promotion to somebody you like over somebody who is more skilled for the position.

  1. The Fear of Mongering

You probably have had experience with somebody in your life that used scare tactics to make you do something, and probably did not react well to that. Trying to instill fear in somebody to achieve results can do the opposite; negative impact on performance. As people naturally get stressed when they are scared, and when people are stressed, they do not perform and they normally would. Then, instead of saying “you better accelerate or you will lose your job”, try to adopt a more positive approach to achieve the desired results.

When it comes to effective leadership, you have to give the best of yourself in all aspects of your business. The use of a single negative leadership skill will have a negative impact on your business success. Good leadership skills are not something that everybody is born with, but that does not mean you cannot be a good leader. It is a learning process and, with the right development and training, you can become the best leader you can be.…
