Communication is essential for success in any business. The inability to communicate goals and expectations will lead to confusion, poor performance as well as bad results. Work on your communication skills to make sure everybody understands the objectives and the expectations. Use various forms of communication to convey the message effectively, such as hold meetings, send newsletters and emails.

Of course, being friendly is a good thing, and it definitely helps maintain the morale of your staff. However, being too kind can be harmful. There will be times when you should make vital decisions related to your staff, and if you are too friendly with your peers and staff, you may not be willing to accept such decisions. Some may also try to take advantage of their relationship with you to get ahead. You can be friendly to avoid this problem, but set limits and ensure your staff understands that you are the boss.

Let’s be honest; it is human nature to choose sides. We all support a specific character in a movie or in a book. But the workplace is not a movie or a book; it is reality and your business, and if you want to execute the fairest shipment possible, you will have to remain unbiased. You cannot choose sides when there is a confrontation, or provide a promotion to somebody you like over somebody who is more skilled for the position.

  1. The Fear of Mongering

You probably have had experience with somebody in your life that used scare tactics to make you do something, and probably did not react well to that. Trying to instill fear in somebody to achieve results can do the opposite; negative impact on performance. As people naturally get stressed when they are scared, and when people are stressed, they do not perform and they normally would. Then, instead of saying “you better accelerate or you will lose your job”, try to adopt a more positive approach to achieve the desired results.

When it comes to effective leadership, you have to give the best of yourself in all aspects of your business. The use of a single negative leadership skill will have a negative impact on your business success. Good leadership skills are not something that everybody is born with, but that does not mean you cannot be a good leader.
